The Brief & Architectural Context
Situated in the historic village of Meonstoke in the heart of the Meon Valley, this period cottage scheme required sensitive refurbishment of the original structural fabric alongside the creation of a contemporary, light-filled rear extension. The objective was to blend traditional Hampshire red brickwork and clay tiles with modern architectural glazing, standing-seam roofing, and seamless indoor-outdoor patio living.
Construction Challenges & Execution
-
Heritage & Contemporary Material Integration: Meticulously matching existing red-brick coursing with modern brickwork and capping details, framed by anthracite gray structural fascias and standing-seam zinc roof structures.
-
Structural Glazing & Light Integration: Installation of custom bi-fold door systems, full-height architectural picture windows, and a frameless glass box bay projecting into the paved patio area.
-
Thermal Envelope & Waterproofing: Upgrading insulation levels and sub-floor damp proofing across both original and extended floorplates without increasing overall ridge height.
-
Exterior Terrace & Retaining Work: Excavating and constructing new split-level sandstone paving, sleeper retaining walls, and timber-edged garden steps to maximize outdoor entertaining space.
The Outcome & Client Value
Darcy Construction successfully delivered a striking architectural synthesis—protecting the charm of the historic Meon Valley cottage while introducing high-performance, open-plan living and exceptional visual links to the surrounding garden landscape.
